The short answer

Professional Wallpaper Installation for Johannesburg Homes and Businesses

The wallpaper installers who review and measure your wall are the same people who do the fitting, whether the wallpaper came from us or from somewhere else.

A professional installation is more than hanging paper. Depending on the job, it covers:

  • Reviewing your photos and project details, including the address
  • Inspecting the wall surface for anything that would show through
  • Measuring the wall and noting everything that interrupts it
  • Checking that the wallpaper type and quantity suit the wall
  • Planning where joins and the main part of the design will fall
  • Hanging and aligning each drop, then trimming it
  • Finishing into corners, around sockets and switches, and along the ceiling and skirting

Not automatically included

The R160/m rate covers installation. Taking down old wallpaper, repairing damaged plaster and treating an unsuitable surface are separate. If your wall needs any of that, we say so when we review the project, so it is on the quote rather than discovered on the day.

Walls that need building or plastering work may need another trade first. We will tell you if that is the case.

Coverage

Which Johannesburg Areas We Cover

Johannesburg is a big city, and we don't cover every part of it. We work within an approximate service radius of 25 miles, about 40 km, from our workshop in Midrand. That takes in most of northern Johannesburg and the city centre. The south and far west are near the edge of that radius or beyond it.

The table shows approximate straight-line distances from Gallagher Corner to the centre of each area. Driving distances are longer. Sandton, Fourways and Randburg are on our published list of areas we commonly work in. For every other area, send the address and we will check it before booking anything.

Any travel costs for your project are confirmed on the quotation.

Before we travel

Wallpaper Installation for Johannesburg Projects

We travel to these sites from Midrand, so we plan the visit before we set out. Knowing how to get onto the site and when we are allowed to work lets us do the site measure and the installation properly on the day. Tell us about any of these when you get in touch.

Estates and complexes

Many estates and sectional-title complexes, especially in northern Johannesburg, have gate procedures, contractor registration and set working hours. Let us know the estate's rules in advance so the measure and the installation happen in one smooth visit each, not a morning lost at the gate.

Apartments and high-rise buildings

Parking, lift access, loading bays and building rules decide how material and equipment get to the wall. Custom wallpaper arrives as printed panels that have to reach the room without being creased, so tell us how the building is laid out.

Offices and business premises

In office parks and managed buildings, work may need approval from building management, and it may have to happen outside trading hours or around occupied desks. If there is a deadline, such as a launch or a client visit, tell us when you first ask for a quote.

Older houses

Older houses in Johannesburg's established suburbs often have high ceilings, decorative cornices, and walls that have been painted many times or patched over the years. None of that rules out wallpaper, but it affects preparation and trimming, so we look at the wall before we quote a final price.

Photos taken straight on from a few steps back are the most useful. A second photo showing the whole room helps us plan too.

Two service paths

Already Have Wallpaper, or Need It Made?

You already have the wallpaper

We install wallpaper bought from other suppliers, not only our own. Before we quote, we check the wallpaper format, whether you have enough of it for the wall, the condition of the wall, how complex the job is, and whether your address is in our area.

Please send:

  • A photograph of the wall
  • Approximate width and height
  • The product name or label details, including pattern repeat if shown
  • How many rolls or panels you have
  • The project address or suburb

You need the wallpaper and the installation

We print custom seamless wallpaper to the exact size of your wall and install it ourselves. The steps are:

  1. Choose a design from the Signature Collection, or send your own artwork
  2. Send us a photo of the wall and the address
  3. We measure the wall on site
  4. We scale the artwork to the measured wall
  5. You review the layout and crop, and approve it
  6. We print the wallpaper
  7. We install it
Wall assessment

What We Check Before Wallpaper Goes on the Wall

Most problems you see on a finished wallpaper wall were there before it was hung. These are the things we look at before we quote.

Cracks, plaster and paint

Hairline cracks, blown or damaged plaster, and loose or flaking paint all show through wallpaper, and they can let it lift later. We point these out when we assess the wall. Some need only light preparation. Others need repair work, which is quoted separately or done by another trade first.

Old wallpaper and uneven surfaces

New paper should not go over old paper, because the old seams show through. Bumps, dents and ridges from earlier repairs show too, especially under raking light from a window. We note these and plan the preparation before we fix a price.

Real measurements

A rough width and height is enough for a first estimate. Custom wallpaper, though, is printed to the wall, and even an off-the-shelf job depends on the real height and on where the wall is out of square. That is why the site measure matters.

Corners and returns

Walls are rarely perfectly straight, so a pattern that turns a corner can drift out of line. We set each wall out from a true vertical and plan where joins fall. On a mural, we decide beforehand whether the image wraps round the corner or stops at it.

Sockets and switches

Plug points and light switches need neat cut-outs so the cover plates sit cleanly over the paper. We note where they are during the measure, so on a custom design they don't land on an important part of the image. Any electrical work, such as moving a socket, is a job for a qualified electrician, not the installer.

Cornices, ceilings and skirtings

The top and bottom edges are where people notice a poor job. When a ceiling line slopes or a cornice is uneven, we have to decide how to finish the edge, and a mural needs a margin planned for it so nothing important gets cut off.

The wallpaper itself

Vinyl, non-woven, paper-backed and self-adhesive wallpapers each need a different method and adhesive. If you are supplying the wallpaper, we check the product, the batch and the quantity before the job, because wallpaper bought in the wrong amount is a common reason for delays.

Moisture and room conditions

Damp walls, rising damp, leaks and poor ventilation have to be dealt with before any wallpaper goes up. Kitchens and bathrooms are sometimes suitable, depending on the room and the material, but not always, so we assess them case by case.

The finish

Why Wallpaper Installation Quality Matters

Wallpaper is often the most noticeable finish in a room, so small installation faults are easy to see. The difference between a good installation and a poor one is mostly in the edges and joins.

What goes wrong

  • Joins that show, gap or overlap
  • A pattern that doesn't line up across drops
  • Bubbles and edges that lift
  • Ragged trims at the ceiling and skirting
  • Creased or damaged paper
  • Untidy cuts around sockets
  • A mural that sits off-centre or is cropped through its focal point

What we aim for

  • Planned placement, set out from a true vertical
  • Accurate alignment from drop to drop
  • Careful trimming and clean edges
  • Wallpaper handled so it isn't creased or stretched
  • Preparation suited to that specific wall
  • A mural placed exactly where the approved proof shows it

With custom wallpaper, the installer's job is to put the artwork exactly where it was designed to sit. The print has no repeating pattern to fall back on if a drop is off.

Custom wallpaper

Custom Wallpaper Made to Fit the Actual Wall

Off-the-shelf rolls come in standard widths with a repeating pattern, and they are trimmed to fit your wall. Custom wallpaper works the other way round: we start from your wall and print the design to fit it.

We measure the wall first. Then we either take a design from the Signature Collection or check whether your own image has enough resolution for a wall that size. Once the image is suitable, we scale it to the measured dimensions and plan the crop, then send you a proof to approve. We print only after you approve it, and then we install it.

What a mural has to be planned around

  • Doors and windows that cut into the image
  • Sockets, switches and wall-mounted screens
  • Furniture that will cover the lower part of the wall
  • Corners, and whether the image wraps round them
  • The main subject of the image and where it sits in the room
  • Horizon lines, which show up any slope in the ceiling
  • Text and logos, which must never be cut through or hidden behind a desk

Custom seamless wallpaper is published at R550/m². Installation is priced separately at R160/m. See the full wallpaper service page for the complete process, or read about custom versus ready-made wallpaper.

Residential and commercial

Homes and Commercial Spaces

Residential wallpaper installation

We install in lounges, bedrooms, dining rooms, nurseries, home offices and entrance halls, on single feature walls and full murals. In a home, the practical questions are what furniture stays in the room, whether the house is occupied, and which wall will be seen first from the doorway.

  • Entrance walls, which need to look right from a distance and close up
  • Home offices, where the wall behind the desk shows on video calls
  • Nurseries, where the scale of the design needs care

Commercial wallpaper installation

We install in offices, reception areas, meeting rooms, shops and hospitality spaces, including branded feature walls. Commercial walls tend to be larger. The artwork often includes a logo that has to be positioned exactly, and the installation has to fit around access rules, signage, screens and the times the building is in use.

  • Reception walls, where the artwork has to work around the desk
  • Meeting rooms, where screens and cabling interrupt the wall
  • Shops and hospitality spaces, which may need after-hours work
How it works

From Johannesburg Address to Finished Wall

  1. Send your wall and address

Send a photo, an approximate width and height, the wallpaper details if you already have it, and your address or suburb.

  2. We confirm coverage and review the job

We check that your address is within our area. Then we look at the wall, the wallpaper and the type of project, and note any preparation it will probably need, along with any site access requirements.

  3. We measure where needed

On site we record the real dimensions of the wall and everything that interrupts it. Custom wallpaper always needs this site measure.

  4. You approve the quote

The quote lists installation, material (if we are supplying it), wall preparation and any travel costs as separate lines, so you know what each part costs.

  5. We prepare the artwork (custom wallpaper only)

For custom wallpaper, we scale the artwork to your measured wall and send you a proof. We print only after you sign it off. If you are supplying your own wallpaper, this step does not apply.

  6. We install and finish

We prepare the wall as agreed, then position, align and hang each drop and trim it. We protect your floors and furniture while we work.

Published rates

How Much Does Wallpaper Installation Cost in Johannesburg?

Our wallpaper installation rate starts at R160/m. The measurement that rate applies to, and the final price for your project, are confirmed once we have reviewed the wall, the wallpaper and what the installation involves.

ServicePublished rateHow it is applied
Wallpaper installationR160/mPriced separately from the wallpaper. The measurement it applies to is confirmed when we measure the job.
Custom seamless wallpaperR550/m²Priced on the area of the wall it is printed for. Installation is not included.

The two rates are measured differently. Wallpaper is priced by square metre of wall area. Installation is priced on the measurement we confirm for your project. For a project that needs both, the quote shows them as separate lines.

What affects your quote

  • The condition of the wall and what preparation it needs
  • Existing finishes, including old wallpaper
  • The type of wallpaper being installed
  • The size of the wall and how many walls there are
  • Access, including ceiling height, stairwells and building rules
  • How complicated the installation is
  • Your project address, and any travel costs, confirmed on the quote

Our guide to wallpaper costs in South Africa shows typical prices across the national market. The rates in the table above are Signature Wallcoverings' own.

Questions

Johannesburg Wallpaper Installation Questions

Do you install wallpaper in Johannesburg?

Yes, at addresses inside our service area. Signature Wallcoverings is based at Gallagher Corner in Midrand and works within an approximate 25-mile (about 40 km) radius of the workshop. That radius covers most of northern Johannesburg and the city centre. Send us your address and we will confirm whether we cover it before anything is booked.

Which Johannesburg areas do you cover?

Sandton, Fourways and Randburg are on our list of areas we commonly work in. Places such as Sunninghill, Rivonia, Bryanston, Rosebank and the CBD are all well within the radius, but we still check each address. Southern and far-western areas, such as Soweto and Lenasia, are near the edge of the radius or outside it, so please ask before assuming we can come. The service areas page has the full picture.

Are you based in Johannesburg?

No. Our only premises are at Gallagher Corner, Gallagher Ave, Halfway House, Midrand, 1685. We don't have a Johannesburg branch or showroom. Our team travels from Midrand to the sites we cover.

Is there a travel charge?

Any travel costs for your project are confirmed on your quotation, so you see them before you agree to anything.

How much does wallpaper installation cost in Johannesburg?

Signature Wallcoverings publishes wallpaper installation at R160/m. The measurement that rate applies to, and your final price, are confirmed once we have reviewed and measured the wall, the wallpaper and the job. Wall condition, the type of wallpaper, the size of the wall, access, preparation and any travel costs all affect the quote. You can get a rough idea using the wallpaper cost calculator.

Can you install wallpaper I bought myself?

Yes. We install wallpaper bought from other suppliers, once we have checked it. Send us a photo of the wall, the product details, how many rolls or panels you have, and the wall's approximate size, and we will confirm the wallpaper suits the wall and that you have enough.

Can you supply the wallpaper too?

Yes. We print custom seamless wallpaper to the measured size of your wall, using a Signature Collection design or your own suitable image, and we install it ourselves. The wallpaper is priced at R550/m² and installation separately at R160/m.

Do you measure the wall before installation?

Custom wallpaper always gets a site measure, because the print is made to your wall's exact dimensions. For a simple job with wallpaper you have supplied, clear photos and accurate measurements are sometimes enough for a quote, and we confirm the dimensions before we start. Measuring and installing are separate visits.

What if my wall has cracks or damaged plaster?

Tell us about them and include a close-up photo. Small cracks and minor surface faults may only need light preparation. Blown plaster or structural cracking needs proper repair first, and that is quoted separately or done by another trade. Wallpaper hung over an unsound wall will show the fault and may fail.

How are sockets and light switches handled?

We cut the wallpaper neatly around each one so the cover plate sits cleanly over the edge. We note where they are during the measure, so on custom designs they don't land on an important part of the artwork. If a socket or switch needs moving, that is work for a qualified electrician, not the installer.

Do you install wallpaper in offices and commercial spaces?

Yes. We install in offices, reception areas, meeting rooms, shops and hospitality spaces, including branded walls. Please tell us about any building-management approval, work-hour restrictions and deadlines when you ask for a quote.

Can wallpaper go in a bathroom or kitchen?

Sometimes. It depends on the specific room, its ventilation, how close the wall is to water or heat, and the material. We assess each case before recommending anything. Walls with an existing damp problem need that fixed before any wallpaper goes up.

How long does installation take?

It depends on the size and number of walls, the preparation needed, the material and, for custom wallpaper, how long proof approval and printing take. We confirm the timeframe with your quote rather than guessing before we have seen the wall.

Can I send photos of my wall on WhatsApp?

Yes. WhatsApp a photo of the wall to 064 524 8226 with the approximate width and height, the wallpaper details and your suburb. Photos taken straight on, plus one showing the whole room, are the most useful.
