What the service covers

What Professional Wallpaper Installation Includes

Professional wallpaper installation in Midrand means the wall is assessed and measured before any paper is cut, then the material is hung, aligned, trimmed and finished against the real edges of the room. Signature Wallcoverings installs both wallpaper supplied by the customer and custom wallpaper printed in-house, and the installation is quoted from the measured wall rather than a guess.

Depending on the project, the work may involve:

  • Reviewing the wall surface and flagging anything that would show through the finished paper
  • Confirming actual width and height rather than working from rough figures
  • Checking the wallpaper format and whether the available quantity covers the wall
  • Identifying preparation that has to happen before installation day
  • Planning where drops, joins and the focal part of the design will fall
  • Hanging, aligning and trimming the material
  • Finishing at cornices, ceilings, skirtings, corners, sockets and switches

What is quoted separately

Not every job needs the same preparation, so the installation rate is not a catch-all. Wall repairs, removing old wallpaper, and sealing an unsuitable surface are separate items. If your wall needs any of that, it is raised when the project is reviewed rather than appearing as a surprise on the day.

If a wall is unsuitable for wallpaper as it stands, that is better heard at the quoting stage than after the material has been printed.

Two ways to use the service

Bring Your Own Wallpaper, or Have It Made

Both routes start the same way: a photograph of the wall and its rough dimensions. What changes is whether we are fitting a product you already own or producing the wallpaper as well.

You already have the wallpaper

Wallpaper bought from a retailer, an online supplier or an interior designer can be fitted as an installation-only project, provided the product and the wall are suitable. Checking first protects you: rolls are often bought short, because pattern repeat affects how much of each roll is usable.

Send through:

  • A photograph of the wall, taken straight on
  • The product name, material type and pattern repeat if it is printed on the label
  • How many rolls or square metres you have
  • Approximate wall width and height
  • The project address or suburb

You need the wallpaper and the installation

Custom seamless wallpaper is printed to the measured size of your wall, so the design is not tiled or trimmed to fit afterwards. Start from the Signature Collection, or send your own photograph or artwork to be assessed at wall scale.

This route adds:

  • A site measure to record the wall accurately
  • Artwork scaled and cropped against those real dimensions
  • A composition proof before anything goes to print
  • Production, then installation as a single coordinated job

Still deciding between a printed design and a shop-bought roll? Our guide to custom versus ready-made wallpaper sets out the practical differences.

Before anything is hung

What We Check Before Wallpaper Installation

Most wallpaper problems are decided before the first drop goes up. These are the things worth looking at on your wall, whoever ends up installing it.

Wall condition

Cracks, flaking or chalky paint, patched plaster and previous repairs all affect how wallpaper sits and stays put. Wallpaper follows the wall underneath it, so a ridge or a lifting edge reads through the finished surface rather than disappearing behind it. Anything we find is identified up front and quoted as preparation where it is needed.

Existing wallpaper

Hanging new paper over old is rarely a good idea: the seams underneath show, and old adhesive can lift once fresh paste goes on. Whether existing wallpaper strips cleanly depends on what is behind it, so it is assessed rather than assumed. Removal is not included in the installation rate.

Actual dimensions

Rough measurements are fine for a first conversation, not for production. Walls are seldom square, ceiling heights drift across a room, and a bulkhead changes the usable height. Measuring properly is what lets custom wallpaper be printed to size and an installation-only job be quoted honestly.

Corners and returns

An internal corner, a window reveal or a short return wall interrupts the design. On a repeating pattern that means planning where the joins land. On a mural it matters more, because part of the image will turn the corner or stop at it, a decision best made on the drawing, not discovered on site.

Sockets, switches and fittings

Plug points, light switches, aircon units, TV brackets and cable trunking all have to be trimmed around. Where they sit is recorded at the measure so the cuts are planned, not improvised. On a custom design it also affects layout: nobody wants a switch plate in the middle of the one detail the wall was chosen for.

Ceiling, cornice and skirting lines

These are the edges people actually look at. A cornice that is not level, a skirting that steps, or a ceiling line that falls away all need the top and bottom trims handled deliberately. Getting them right is most of what separates a neat wall from an obviously amateur one.

The material itself

Paper-backed, vinyl, non-woven and self-adhesive products each want their own handling, and pattern repeat determines how much material a wall really needs. For customer-supplied wallpaper this is the first thing we check, because the quantity on hand does not always cover the wall once the repeat is accounted for.

Moisture and room conditions

Damp is the one issue worth resolving before spending anything: staining, a musty smell, bubbling paint or a wall backing onto a shower or a leak. Wallpaper will not hold on a wall that is still wet. Bathrooms and kitchens are not ruled out, but ventilation, splash zones and the material have to be assessed for that room.

The finish

Good Wallpaper Can Still Look Wrong

A wall is judged from about a metre away, in daylight, by someone standing in the room every day. At that distance the design is only half of it. The other half is the quality of the wallpaper fitting.

What poor fitting looks like

  • Patterns that do not meet across a join
  • Seams that lift, gap or overlap visibly
  • Trapped air and bubbling across a drop
  • Ragged trims at the cornice or skirting
  • Torn or stretched edges around switches
  • A mural sitting too high, too low or cropped through its focal point

What we aim for instead

  • Drops set out from a true vertical, not from the corner
  • Joins placed where they are least noticeable
  • Pattern matched consistently across the wall
  • Clean, straight cuts at every edge and fitting
  • Surface prepared appropriately for the material
  • Composition landing where it was proofed to land

On a custom mural this matters more than on a repeat pattern. A repeating design forgives a shifted drop. A single image across a wall does not, because there is only one correct position for it.

How a project runs

From Your First Photograph to a Finished Wall

  1. Send us the wall

A straight-on photograph, a rough width and height, the project address or suburb, and the wallpaper details if you have them. That is enough to tell you whether the job is straightforward and what it will involve.

  2. We review it

We look at the surface, the material, whether this is installation-only or supply-and-install, whether preparation is likely, and whether the address falls inside our service area. Anything that could change the price is raised here.

  3. We measure on site

Real dimensions are recorded, along with the interruptions that affect the job: corners, returns, bulkheads, sockets, switches, cornice and skirting lines. Custom wallpaper cannot be produced accurately without this step.

  4. You approve the quote

Installation, material where we supply it, and any preparation are listed separately so you can see what you are paying for. Where the wallpaper is custom, the scaled artwork is proofed against the measured wall and signed off before printing.

  5. We install and finish

The wall is prepared as agreed, drops are set out and hung in order, the pattern or composition is aligned, and every edge is trimmed. Furniture and floors are covered and the room is left usable.

How Much Does Wallpaper Installation Cost in Midrand?

Signature Wallcoverings publishes wallpaper installation at R160/m. The applicable installation measurement and the final project price are confirmed once the wall, the wallpaper and the project requirements have been reviewed and measured.

Signature Wallcoverings published rates. VAT treatment, where applicable, is confirmed on the formal quotation.
ServicePublished rateHow it is applied
Wallpaper installationR160/mQuoted separately from material. The applicable measurement is confirmed when the project is measured.
Custom seamless wallpaperR550/m²Printed to the measured size of the wall. Installation is not included in this rate.

These are two different measurement bases and they are not interchangeable. Material is priced by area; installation is priced on the measurement confirmed for your project. If you need both, they appear as separate lines on the quotation.

What moves the final number

Two walls of the same size can quote differently. The factors that actually change a Signature quotation are:

  • The condition of the existing wall and any preparation it needs
  • Whether old wallpaper has to come off first
  • The type and format of the wallpaper being hung
  • The size of the wall and how many walls are involved
  • Access — height, stairwells, fixed furniture, live office space
  • Whether we are supplying the wallpaper or only installing it

Our national guide to wallpaper cost per square metre covers general South African market ranges. The rates above are Signature Wallcoverings' own published prices.

Custom wallpaper installation

Custom Wallpaper Designed Around the Actual Wall

Signature Wallcoverings produces custom seamless wallpaper from Signature Collection artwork or from a suitable customer-supplied image, scaled against the measured wall before it is printed and installed.

The difference between custom wallpaper and a roll off a shelf is that the wall is the starting point. Once measured, the artwork is scaled and cropped to those proportions and you see where everything will sit before production begins. If an image will not hold up at wall scale, that is better known now than after printing.

Why installing a mural is a different job

With a repeating pattern, the installer is matching a repeat. With a single large image there is no repeat to fall back on: there is one intended position, and the wall has to be set out to hold it. In practice that means planning where these land:

  • Faces, figures and the main subject of the artwork
  • Horizon lines, which read as crooked if the room is not square
  • The part of the design that will sit behind a sofa, a bed or a reception desk
  • Doorways, windows and corners that cut into the image
  • Sockets and switches falling on a detail you wanted visible

Homes and commercial interiors

Where Wallpaper Gets Installed

The material and the method change with the room, so it is worth saying what kind of space you are working with when you make contact.

Residential

Lounges, bedrooms, dining rooms, nurseries, children's rooms, feature walls and full murals. Homes usually mean working around furniture that stays in the room, and finishing against skirtings, cornices and door frames that are already painted. A room in daily use has to be left clean and usable at the end of it.

  • Feature walls behind a bed or a lounge seating arrangement
  • Full-height murals in double-volume spaces
  • Children's rooms where scale and placement matter most

Commercial

Reception areas, offices, meeting rooms, retail interiors and hospitality spaces. Commercial walls tend to be larger, often carry branded artwork, and bring constraints a home does not: access windows outside trading hours, existing signage and screens to work around, and services running across the wall.

  • Reception walls where the artwork sits behind a desk
  • Branded or custom graphics scaled to the space
  • Work scheduled around occupied offices and retail floors

Wallpaper is not always the right answer for a given wall. If you are still weighing it up, see wallpaper versus paint for a feature wall.

Questions

Wallpaper Installation Questions

How much does wallpaper installation cost in Midrand?

Signature Wallcoverings publishes wallpaper installation at R160/m. The applicable installation measurement and the final project price are confirmed after the wall, the wallpaper and the project requirements have been reviewed and measured. Wall condition, wallpaper type, wall size, access and any preparation needed all affect the final quotation. VAT treatment, where applicable, is confirmed on the formal quotation.

Can you install wallpaper I already bought?

Yes. Suitable customer-supplied wallpaper can be fitted as an installation-only project. Send a photograph of the wall, the product and material details, how much wallpaper you have and the approximate dimensions, so both the material and the wall can be checked before anything is booked.

Can Signature Wallcoverings supply the wallpaper as well?

Yes. Custom seamless wallpaper is produced from Signature Collection designs or from a suitable image you supply, printed to the measured size of your wall. The wallpaper and the installation are quoted as separate lines on the same quotation.

How much does custom wallpaper cost?

Custom seamless wallpaper is published at R550 per square metre for the printed material. Installation is priced separately at R160/m. You can work through an estimate for your own wall in the wallpaper cost calculator.

Do you measure the wall before installation?

A site measure is booked where the project needs one, and it is always required for custom wallpaper, since the artwork is scaled to the recorded dimensions before printing. For a straightforward installation-only job, a clear photograph and accurate dimensions are often enough to quote from, with measurements confirmed before work begins.

Does the wall have to be perfectly smooth?

Not perfect, but sound. Wallpaper follows whatever is underneath it, so ridges, lifting paint, open cracks and old patch repairs tend to show through the finished surface. Your wall is assessed on its own merits, and any preparation it needs is identified and quoted before installation.

Can wallpaper be installed over painted walls?

Often yes, provided the paint is sound and well adhered. Chalky, flaking or heavily textured paint is a different matter, and some finishes need treating before wallpaper will hold. Whether your painted wall is suitable as it stands depends on that surface, which is what the assessment is for.

Do you remove old wallpaper?

Removal of existing wallpaper is not included in the published installation rate. Whether it strips cleanly depends on what is behind it and how it was originally hung, so it is assessed as part of the project and quoted separately if required. Hanging new wallpaper directly over old is not recommended.

Can you install wallpaper in a bathroom or kitchen?

Sometimes, but not automatically. Moisture levels, ventilation, proximity to a shower or a hob, and the suitability of the specific material all have to be assessed for that room first. A wall with existing damp needs the damp resolved before anything is hung, because wallpaper will not hold on it.

Do you install wallpaper in offices and commercial spaces?

Yes. Reception areas, offices, meeting rooms, retail interiors and hospitality spaces are all handled, including branded artwork scaled to the wall. Commercial projects often need access arranged around occupied space, so mention that when you first make contact and it can be built into the schedule.

How long does wallpaper installation take?

There is no single answer, and anyone quoting one without seeing the wall is guessing. Timing depends on the wall size, the number of walls, the material, the preparation required and, for custom wallpaper, artwork approval and production. The expected timeframe is confirmed when the project is quoted.

What should I send to get a quote?

A straight-on photograph of the wall, an approximate width and height, the project address or suburb, and the wallpaper details if you already have it. That is enough to come back to you with a clear next step. You can send it through the form below, by SMS, or on WhatsApp.
